Harnessing the energy beneath your feet
Geothermal heat pumps work like a reversible kitchen refrigerator. In the winter, the heat pump concentrates the heat stored in the ground and pumps it into your building. In summer, the system reverses itself and concentrates the heat in your building and pumps it into the ground.
Greater than 400% efficiency? That seems impossible!
It sounds like the next perpetual motion machine the first time you hear it. Almost, but not quite. These systems do in fact deliver more than four times as much heat than what you supply to them in electricity.
For example:
- The best fossil fuel furnaces are about 90% efficient. 1000 BTU of fuel gives you 900 BTU of heat. That means 10% of your money goes up the chimney!
- A Geothermal Heat Pump with a COP of 4.5 would consume 1000 watts of electricity and deliver about 4500 watts of heat. As a result, energy bill savings can be as much as 70% compared to fossil fuels.
Here is an analogy:
A heat pump does not convert fuel to heat; it pumps it from one place to another. Imagine driving 15 miles to the Gas Station for 5 gallons of gasoline to put in your lawn mower. If your car gets 30 miles to the gallon, you only used 1 gallon of gas to fetch 5 gallons. So, in total you put in 1 gallon and got 5 gallons. Geothermal heat pumps work the same way; the earth is like the gas station. The Earth stores heat from the sun all summer and we use a Geothermal Heat Pump to retreive this heat in the winter.
